2017 was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians in Nashville, according to the group Walk Bike Nashville. The statistics compiled by the group, demonstrate that 23 pedestrians were killed in 2017 alone and that 30% of all Davidson County traffic-related deaths were people who were walking.

In fact, according to the statistics compiled by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, there were 405 pedestrian-related accidents in Davidson County in 2017. Rutherford County had 53 pedestrian-related accidents in 2017 as well. For the sake of comparison, in 2008 Davidson County had 264 pedestrian-related traffic accidents, and Rutherford County had 29. The increase in the number of accidents is apparent. While Davidson County had a vastly higher number of such incidents, the reality is as the population grows and these areas become more densely populated, the presence of pedestrians on the roads is only increasing.
It is not just these large metropolitan areas, look at Coffee County. It had five pedestrian accidents in 2007 and 13 in 2017. That is quite a jump for a smaller area. The reality is that the population growth has added to the number of pedestrians and this is just another thing drivers need to be constantly vigilant about.
